There are poems in this collection which I absolutely adore and others which, although still wonderfully composed, don't resonate with me like some of the authors other work and that's ok.įoghorn Leghorn is Big Bruiser Dope Boy's first book and within its pages is an author/poet who is developing his own unique voice. It’s kind of a masterpiece.īBDB’s cartoonish conception for the cover aptly illustrates the type of increasingly absurd adult world we live in: each of us trying to find our way amid the bizarre cultural clutter and distraction, reaching for those pure moments wherever- and whenever- we can find them. I have to admit, this poem made a tear fall. The way BBDB gives voice to the roller-coaster emotions intrinsic in both new and aging relationships is honest, succinct and inventive. ‘Hologram Baby’ is an incredibly moving piece, in the same vein as ‘Your First Real Boyfriend’ to a degree. There’s something special about a book that can make you feel like crying amid the other elements. It’s funny, scary, poignant and funny again. It, quite simply, contains all the elements of what I consider a well-rounded experience. The feeling I got as a delved further into the book was one reminiscent of a post-modern variety show. The book itself contains these poems and it’s nice to have them in one concise volume alongside his other uniformly compelling works. His command of the language is also to be admired, both high and low. Anyone in the throes of a pursuit to ‘find love’ will find something here to relate to. I don’t want to peg it as a gay poem, necessarily, because I think it’s far more universal than that. Then he posted ‘Your First Real Boyfriend’ online, which, in my opinion, is an astute commentary on a particular kind of dating culture/situation that a lot of gay men (and women alike) find themselves in. Doubtfire 2’ and the various parts of ‘69 Remakes’ with a sense of giddy satisfaction. In particular, I appreciated his form and varied approaches, his humor, his vulnerability. I found, and deeply related to, BBDB’s poetry and prose prior to the release of his first book, FOGHORN LEGHORN.
